Handyman: what he can do and when to call him
The term handyman refers to a skilled tradesperson for small household tasks: from furniture assembly through drilling and hanging to minor plumbing and electrical repairs. It is not a specialist in one field, but a generalist who resolves most common issues in a single visit, without you needing to source several different tradespeople for individual small jobs. In this overview you will find what a handyman typically handles and where their work ends.
Furniture assembly and installation
The most common request is assembling furniture from the box, wardrobes, beds, chests of drawers and office furniture. This also includes securely fixing televisions to the wall, including locating load-bearing points and using appropriate anchors according to the wall type.
Drilling, hanging and anchoring
Pipes, pictures, mirrors, curtains and coat hooks, everything that needs to hang straight, securely and permanently. The service also includes an assessment of which type of wall plug or anchor the wall requires so that the hanging item does not fall out over time.
Blinds, roller shutters and window and door seals
Installation and adjustment of blinds and roller shutters, replacement or addition of seals on windows and doors, repair of squeaking or leaking hinges. These are minor tasks that save heat and nerves but do not require a specialised tradesman.
Minor plumbing work
Replacing a tap washer at the basin or sink, replacing a siphon, repairing the flushing mechanism, tightening or replacing seals. These are interventions that do not require work on the wider water supply system: typically swapping one part for another in the existing installation.
Minor electrical work
Replacement of lights, switches and sockets, connection of a luminaire or minor adjustment to an existing socket circuit according to the current wiring. This always involves replacement or addition to an existing installation, without inspections and without intervention in the main distribution board.
Carpentry and minor masonry repairs
Loose hinges and drawers on cupboards, wobbly table legs, sanding and oiling doors that scrape against the frame, all these are minor carpentry repairs that do not require custom-made furniture. The same applies to small plastering tasks: filling holes left by old wall plugs, repairing minor cracks in the plaster or tightening loose tiles.
Apartment completion after moving in
After moving, several tasks usually pile up at once, unpacking and assembling furniture, hanging pictures and shelves, mounting the TV, adjusting blinds, and minor repairs for anything damaged during the move. It pays to handle them in one visit: transport is paid for only once, and the flat is ready for occupancy without unnecessary additional trips.
What a certified tradesman already does
Once the work involves extensive electrical installation or gas distribution, a handyman is no longer the right choice. Electrical and gas work must be carried out by authorised specialists, whether it is new wiring, modifying a consumer unit, connecting a gas appliance, or anything requiring expert assessment and inspection. In such cases, it is more honest to recommend a specialised tradesperson immediately rather than attempting something that requires different qualifications.
Before starting work, the scope of the job is always agreed upon. If it turns out to be work that requires a certified specialist, we will say so in advance and will not do anything outside our remit. It is better to clearly state what exceeds the given job than to provide a makeshift solution that will not last long.
When does it pay to book multiple jobs at once?
If several small tasks come up in an apartment, such as hanging a shelf, replacing a bathroom tap and adjusting the blinds. It makes sense to report them all in one enquiry and resolve them during a single visit. This saves time and avoids repeated travel around Prague, and you will receive an indicative price for the entire scope of work in advance, just as with individual minor repairs.
